The Evolution of the Chocolate Bunny

Try our famous chocolate bunny!

How do you bite into a chocolate bunny? Do you go for the ears first, or do you prefer to start with the tail? Do you eat the entire treat in one sitting, or do you savor it a little at a time? However you prefer to enjoy your chocolate bunny, you can’t deny that the famous treat is one of the best aspects of spring. Where did these bunnies come from — and how have they evolved over the years?

European Beginnings

Although there is some speculation, the original chocolate bunny probably originated in Germany in the 17th century. Easter bunnies to be found in the literature brought with German immigrants to America. Originally a sign of spring and fertility, the rabbit soon began to be molded into a chocolate dessert.

Onto Pennsylvania

Reading, Pennsylvania was an early hotbed of Easter candy. The local newspaper posted an article about the growing popularity of Easter candy in America, describing how the chocolate bunnies were handcrafted with care. Although a wartime halt mandated by the War Production Board slowed the production of candy, the town made do by manufacturing smaller versions of chocolate bunnies.

The Most Popular Time of the Year

In 2015, Americans spent $1.2 billion on Easter candy, making Easter a busier candy holiday than Christmas, Valentine’s Day or Halloween, according to market research data. The chocolate bunny has transformed its look in candy shops everywhere: what was once a simple rabbit shape now is filled with sugar, wears clothing, and is even seen playing sports! Wockenfuss likes to keep things classic; our chocolate bunnies are now on the website and soon to hit a location near you!
