Gummi Bears: A Historical Tale

Gummi Bear history

Gummi bears have a long and storied history spanning continents. Now we have our own version.

In 1922, German-born Hans Riegel stumbled upon gold: not the expensive metal, but rather the original gummi bears, which he called Gold Bears. Although their origins are humble, gummi bears are now a sugary staple, enjoyed in many flavors and with gummi cousins in all shapes and sizes – worms, frogs, and even kids.

Dancing Bears get their Shape

Frustrated with his monotonous job, Riegel set out to create his own sweet treats, and after some minor success in the form of hard candies, he had the brilliant idea to dabble in gelatins. Dancing bears were a popular attraction at the time, and combining the cute little shape we all know and love with that perfect bite of squishy goodness created pure candy magic. The candy confection held strong until World War II; Riegel lost his life during the conflict, and his company, Haribo, lost its steam. Riegel’s sons took on the challenge of postwar rebuilding, and reinvigorated Haribo and the golden bears that are still popular today.

In 1982, Haribo opened their first office in the United States, right here in Baltimore. This move solidified the role that gummi bears still play in American culture. The German candies are now an absolute favorite and an inspiration for candy makers like those at Wockenfuss Candies. Today, Haribo gummies are still making an impact on the candy industry. Hans Riegel himself would be proud.
