As a child during the Christmas or Hanukkah season, there was nothing quite as exciting as receiving those delicious Chocolate Coins. Okay, maybe you liked your presents a little more, but that milk chocolate currency was certainly number two on your list. Though they are a simple treat (it’s just chocolate covered in gold foil), chocolate coins have been a favorite of children everywhere for quite some time. But when did this tradition first start?
The History of Chocolate Coins
- Christmas Coins: It is all thought to have started with Saint Nicholas, the bishop of Myra in Lycia. While there is no actual documentation, there are many legends of Saint Nicholas’ kindness towards children. One night, it is said that Saint Nicholas dropped bags of coins down chimneys throughout town (some fell into stockings, which were hung up to dry), a tradition that would continue every year. Voila! The firststocking stuffers! As you can imagine, this is also said to be one of the origins of Santa Claus.
- Hanukkah Gelt: The tradition of giving Hanukkah gelt (money) is a long standing tradition, dating back to 17th century Poland. Parents would give their children money to distribute to their teachers. Over time, children began demanding their own money (go figure!) and parents started distributing coins to their children as well. By the 20th century, American chocolatiers began creating chocolate gelt. In the 1920s, Loft’s produced the first chocolate coins wrapped foil and a tradition was born!
