November 20th is National Peanut Butter Fudge Day—a holiday that celebrates one of the most indulgent and delicious treats! With its creamy, rich flavor and melt-in-your-mouth texture, peanut butter fudge is the perfect dessert to enjoy this fall. Let’s dive into the fascinating history of fudge and why Wockenfuss’s peanut butter fudge deserves a spot on your plate this month.

A Sweet History of Fudge

Fudge is a uniquely American creation, believed to have originated in the late 19th century, possibly by a happy accident. The first written reference to fudge was discovered in an 1886 letter penned by Emelyn Bettersby Hartridge, a student at Vassar College in Poughkeepsie, New York. In her letter, Ms. Hartridge described a fudge recipe she obtained from her cousin in Baltimore, Maryland, who was selling the treat for 40 cents a pound.

Ms. Hartridge herself made 30 pounds of fudge in 1888 to sell at the Vassar College Senior Auction, cementing the sweet treat’s popularity among her peers.

Around the same time, fudge began making its way into shops on Mackinac Island, Michigan, where it quickly became a summer staple for vacationers. Many of the original fudge shops on Mackinac Island still make and sell fudge today, continuing a tradition that spans over a century.
