The chocolate Easter bunny has a long and interesting history!

The chocolate Easter bunny is one of this holiday’s best-known and beloved treats. But where did it originate, and when did it become so popular? The history of chocolate Easter bunnies is long and fascinating. Keep reading to discover a few fun facts about your favorite Easter treat, then pick up your own at Wockenfuss Candies!

When Was the First Chocolate Bunny Made?

Chocolate bunnies were first created in Germany in the mid-19th century. They started gaining mass appeal in 1890 when American shop owner Robert Strohecker built a five-foot-tall chocolate bunny as an Easter promotion at his drugstore in Pennsylvania.

Why Are Chocolate Bunnies Hollow?

Easter candy fans know that you can find both hollow and solid chocolate bunnies to enjoy. But the hollow chocolate bunny is a unique treat. How did the hollow chocolate treat come to be? The primary reason chocolatiers made hollow Easter bunnies was that it made it easier to create a larger bunny without making it difficult to eat. The practice of making hollow bunnies became more popular in America during WWII when cocoa was rationed, which meant hollow bunnies could be produced using far less chocolate than the solid versions.

What Was the World’s Largest Chocolate Easter Bunny?

The largest chocolate Easter bunny ever made was created in 2014 for Chocofest in Brazil. This bunny weighed over 8,000 pounds and was over 13 feet tall!

The Creation of Easter Bunnies with Personality

These days you can find chocolate bunnies with personalities, and that all started back in 1934. That year, the Bortz Chocolate Company in Reading, PA, broke from the tradition of standard-style bunnies to create a chocolate bunny that was playing the accordion! Ever since, chocolatiers have experimented with creating a variety of adorable creatures. At Wockenfuss, you can find a range of unique bunnies and other shapes to enjoy.

Easter Bunnies Are Popular Worldwide

How many chocolate bunnies are made every year? Estimates say that nearly 90 million chocolate Easter bunnies are produced worldwide every year! This Easter treat is one of the most popular selections and will continue to be a must-have for every Easter holiday.

Fans of this sweet also have a favorite way to enjoy it. About 89% of Americans think the “best” way to eat a chocolate bunny is ears first!

However you prefer to enjoy this delicious treat, Wockenfuss Candies has high-quality hollow and solid bunny selections you can savor this year. We recommend selecting your hollow Easter bunnies in-store, so you can make sure it remains unbroken until Easter morning.
