But why do we fill baskets with candy every Easter Sunday? Where did this delicious tradition come from?
The History of the Easter Basket
On Easter morning, there is nothing like running downstairs to see what Easter candy that magical bunny left in your basket. But where did this tradition come from? You may be surprised to learn that the Easter basket has its roots in pagan history.
Traditionally, it was customary for people to fill baskets with early seedlings as an offering to Eostre, the fertility goddess. It was thought that these offerings would lead to a good, bountiful harvest. According to some stories, Eostre even carried a basket of eggs. Sound familiar?
The history of the Easter basket, as we know it, originated in Germany. According to German folklore, the Easter hare would leave baskets filled with Easter candy and brightly colored eggs for the children.
Over time, as the Christian church began to evolve, Christian customs began to replace or blend the old Pagan customs, like the Easter basket. So that’s why we fill those baskets with our favorite candy every Easter Sunday. Click Here to browse Wockenfuss’ wide selection of Easter candy.
