Celebrate Chocolate-Covered Pretzel Day on October 7th!

Chocolate and pretzels—two of the most delicious treats in the world—come together on October 7th for National Chocolate-Covered Pretzel Day! Have you ever wondered how these two seemingly different snacks found each other? Learn the history of this incredible snack as you select your favorite chocolate-covered pretzels at your local Wockenfuss Candies.

The History of Chocolate-Covered Pretzels

Many stories have tried to explain how pretzels first got dipped in chocolate. One tale describes a German baker teaming up with his chocolatier neighbor in the 1500s to coat pretzels in melted chocolate. However, this story, like many historical food tales, is purely imaginative. In reality, anyone trying to dip pretzels into chocolate during the 1500s would have had a soggy mess on their hands! Why? Because in those days, chocolate existed only as a liquid drink—not as a solid treat. It wasn’t until 1828, when Casparus van Houten Sr. developed a method to separate cocoa mass into cocoa butter and its solids, that chocolate as we know it today was born.

The perfect match for this new chocolate came a little later when Julius Sturgis opened the first commercial pretzel bakery in 1861 in Lititz, PA. While hard pretzels had been around for some time, Sturgis’s recipe laid the foundation for the pretzels we know and love. Eventually, someone decided to dip these crunchy, salty snacks into chocolate, creating the irresistible sweet-and-salty combo we celebrate today!

Celebrate with Chocolate-Covered Pretzels at Wockenfuss

At Wockenfuss Candies, we love chocolate-covered pretzels in all forms. We use all kinds of chocolate so you can find exactly what you prefer. We use the creamiest chocolate with the freshest, subtly salty pretzels available. Try these three options:

  • Milk Chocolate-Covered Pretzels: The classic, creamy milk chocolate is always a crowd-pleaser. Perfectly smooth and sweet, it pairs beautifully with the crunch of a salty pretzel.
  • Dark Chocolate-Covered Pretzels: For those who prefer a richer, more intense chocolate flavor, dark chocolate-covered pretzels offer a bold bite that balances the salty pretzel perfectly.
  • White Chocolate-Covered Pretzels: If you love a sweeter twist, white chocolate pretzels are a delightful alternative. The smooth, vanilla-like flavor adds a delicious contrast to the salty crunch.
  • Sugar-Free Milk Chocolate-Covered Pretzels: Enjoy all the classic milk chocolate flavors you love but without the added sugar! These are great for those who want to indulge without any guilt.
