Summer is right around the corner, and one of the most iconic treats for the season is saltwater taffy! For most people, especially those from Maryland, the taste of taffy signals the start of summer. Saltwater taffy comes in a variety of flavors; no matter which one is your favorite, you’ll be sure to find something that will satisfy your taste buds. However, even if you know what your favorite flavor of taffy is, there may be a few things you don’t know about this sweet treat.
Its Origins
Soft taffy was invented in Atlantic City, New Jersey in the 1800s. One day, a candy store flooded after a severe storm, and its owner thought the flood ruined all the candy inside. Afterward, a young girl asked for some taffy, which the store’s owner called “saltwater taffy” because of the ocean water that soaked it. It was a hit with the little girl and has been a summertime staple since then!
How It’s Made
After taffy is cooked in a large metal pot, it’s cooled on a slab and then pulled from a large hook known as the “taffy pull.” Then it’s stretched to a length of around five feet and looped over itself to aerate it and make it chewy. Following that, the taffy is cut into the pieces you’re used to seeing in our stores.
