We all know it as the day when sweethearts see life through rose-colored glasses. From its interesting origins to its modern day commercial traditions, here are ten facts you may not have known about Valentine’s Day.

Valentine’s Day dates back centuries to the time when Emperor Claudius II denied Roman men the right to marry during wartime. Bishop Valentine went against his orders and performed secret services for couples who wished to marry. Valentine was jailed by the Emperor; while in prison, he wrote a pleading letter and signed it “from your Valentine.”

About 3% of pet owners will give Valentine’s Day gifts to their pets.

In the 1800s, physicians commonly advised their patients to eat chocolate to calm headaches, pains, or depression.

The first box of Valentine’s Day chocolates was produced by Richard Cadbury in the late 1800s.
