Valentine’s Day is approaching! One of the oldest customs associated with this special day set aside for lovers is to give chocolates. Exchanging small tokens of affection can happen on any day of the year, but on days like this one, it means even more!
Origins In Roman Times
The traditions we associate with Valentine’s Day go back to the ancient Romans. Back then, though, it wasn’t always tied to romantic love. It wasn’t until the late 1300’s that this became a part of the legend. Geoffrey Chaucer, one of the most famous poets ever, wrote a poem called Parlement of Foules, in which he referenced St. Valentine’s Day and gave it its connection with romance. In these times, courtship was what we would later come to call dating or going-steady. Writing notes and giving flowers were integral parts of the courting process.
The Evolution of the Holiday
Victorian England gave Valentine’s Day another boost; the Victorian tradition more closely resembles the occasion we celebrate today. The Victorians adored giving gifts, especially to the ones they loved. This custom gave an idea to chocolate-makers all over the country. Richard Cadbury led the way, marketing his so-called “eating chocolates” by putting them in boxes that were decorated for Valentine’s Day. This idea took off, of course! Images of roses and cupids were added to heart-shaped boxes, intended to encourage people to celebrate the holiday with chocolate. That’s where most of our traditions come from here in the 21st century!
