Our line of fudge has surely grown since our humble start many moons ago, but where did it come from to begin with? Whom do we credit with being the first fudge-maker?
THE FIRST RECORDED MENTION
The first recorded mention of an American-style chocolate fudge was found in a letter written by Emelyn Battersby Hartridge, a student at Vassar College in 1889. At the time, Hartridge wrote that her roommate’s cousin made fudge in Baltimore, Maryland, and sold it for forty cents a pound. She was able to get hold of the fudge recipe, and made thirty pounds of it for the Vassar College Senior Auction.
