Milk, Dark, and White Chocolate: What’s the Difference?

Ah, chocolate. As the creator of the Peanuts comic strip Charles Schultz once said, “All you need is love. But a little chocolate now and then doesn’t hurt.” But even if you’re a chocolate fanatic, you may not know about all the different kinds we have to offer here at Wockenfuss. Out of milk, dark, and white chocolate, which is healthiest? Which is most nutritious? Did you know that one of them technically isn’t even “chocolate?” And perhaps most importantly: Which tastes the best? You’ll find the answers to all of these questions in this week’s blog. That is, all except for the last one – you’ll have to come to your local Wockenfuss store to taste all our delicious chocolates for yourself!

Milk, Dark, and White Chocolate

As the creator of the Peanuts comic strip Charles Schultz once said, “All you need is love. But a little chocolate now and then doesn’t hurt.”

Ingredients and Flavor

Each type of chocolate is produced differently, so their flavors vary significantly.

  • Milk chocolate contains more milk and dairy fat, giving it a creamy texture and lighter brown color with less bitter flavor than dark chocolate.
  • Dark chocolatecontains little or no milk and is mostly comprised of cocoa solids, cocoa butter, and sugar. It’s often semi-sweet and has a slightly bitter flavor.
  • White chocolate actually doesn’t contain any cocoa solids – which is the main ingredient in the other two types of chocolate! The lack of this ingredient gives it the white coloring. It contains cocoa butter, milk, and sugar.

Chocolate Health and Nutrition Facts

In moderation, chocolate actually can have benefits for your health. All three types have generally the same nutritional value, though white chocolate often has more calories. One tablespoon of each type of chocolate contains roughly 1 gram of protein, 8 grams of sugar, and 4.5 grams of fat. Milk and white have some calcium, and dark chocolate has a little bit of dietary iron.

However, the healthiest option when it comes to eating chocolate is going to be dark. It’s rich in antioxidants and provides cardiovascular benefits by reducing inflammation, protecting the skin from oxidative damage, and helping to improve cognitive function and mood. It may also reduce the risk of developing diabetes.
