The History of Peanut Brittle
While no one knows the true history of peanut brittle, there are several theories and a few legends as well. One such story dates the origins of this salty sweet candy back to 1890. As the legend goes, a woman living in the South was trying to make taffy, but mixed up her ingredients. Instead of adding cream of tartar, she accidently added backing soda. Realizing her mistake, she took a taste. Needless to say, she was quite delighted with her new “taffy.” Then she made a bold decision. She added peanuts. The result: the very first Peanut Brittle! Of course, this is just one legend.
Others date peanut brittle back to the Celts.
As the story goes, people began adding syrup to their peanuts to make them sweeter. And when Irish immigrants first came to America, they brought their peanut brittle recipes with them and it quickly caught on, especially with the popularity of peanuts in the South.
A slightly more fantastical story goes as follows. Tony Beaver, a Paul Bunyan-esque lumberjack folk hero, stopped a flood by dumping peanuts and molasses into a river. Not only did he stop the flood and save the nearby townspeople, but he also invented peanut brittle at the very same time. That’s what we like to call a win-win!
