What is the Summer Solstice?
The Summer Solstice is the longest day of the year for the Northern Hemisphere. It is the moment when the sun is directly above the Tropic of Cancer, an imaginary line north of the equator. More importantly, the Summer Solstice marks the beginning of everyone’s favorite season…Summer!
In the southern hemisphere, June 21st marked the official beginning of winter, aka the Winter Solstice. This is because the Earth is tilted on its axis at a 23.5-degree angle. It is because of this that we have the different seasons. So while we in the Northern Hemisphere experienced the longest day of the year (Washington DC had 15 hours of daylight), people in the Southern Hemisphere experienced their shortest day of the year. The opposite happens in December.
“If Earth was just straight up and down, there would never be a winter or summer. It would be the same in the north and south,” explained C. Alex Young of NASA.
