Tales of the Christmas Stocking

Christmas stocking

Where did those stockings come from?

Here at Wockenfuss, we’re always saying that our delectable treats make great stocking stuffers! Our candies come in all sizes, some small enough to sneak into a Christmas stocking and some large enough to fit under the tree. The next time you’re sipping a cup of hot cocoa by your newly decorated fireplace, consider where those neatly hanging stockings came from – and why they’re still important today.

A Merchant and His Daughters

There are a couple of disputed legends suggesting the origin of Christmas stockings, although one hasn’t been agreed on yet. In the first legend, St. Nicholas of Myra, believed to be the inspiration for Santa Claus, is traveling through a small village when he learns of the plight of a merchant and his daughters.

The once wealthy merchant has fallen on difficult times and is worried for the future of his three lovely daughters. Unable to afford dowries for the girls, the three young women have no prospects for wedlock and may be subject to lives of shame. Knowing the merchant would not accept gifts, St. Nicholas rode his horse by the poor merchant’s house one night and tossed three bags of gold into the fireplace, landing by chance in the stockings which were hanging up to dry. When the townspeople heard of this amazing occurrence, other children hung their stockings, too, in hopes that they would receive gifts.

Clogs Filled With Gifts

Another legend dates back to times of Dutch lore when a man named ‘Sinterklaas’ would travel to Holland from Spain. Sinterklaas and his companion, Black Pete, traveled the land on a mule and a white steed, spreading good tidings and helping those in need. The excited Dutch children would leave treats of carrots and hay in their clogs for Sinterklaas’ horse and mule; in exchange, he would fill their clogs, or wooden shoes, with small gifts.
