Baltimore Origins

The Goetze story begins with August and his son William. In the 1890s, August worked as an engraver and produced printing plates for the Baltimore Chewing Gum Company. Soon after, August bought the gum business with his son. In 1909, William’s son R. Melvin Goetze joined the company. The family stayed in the confectionery business when the First World War began. However, due to the shortage of some commodities, the family was inspired to develop new confections. In 1917, Melvin began making “Chuees,” or caramel creams without the center. The following year, Caramel Creams were released.

The Arrival of Caramel Creams

In 1918, Goetze’s Candy Company introduced the famous Caramel Creams, also known as Bull’s Eyes. The unique caramel candy features a chewy outer layer with a creamy center. The combination of textures and flavors has delighted customers for over 100 years! The caramel is made with wheat to produce a chewy consistency, unlike the sticky caramel texture in other candies. Caramel Creams still use the same vanilla flavor that was introduced by Goetze’s back in 1918. In the 1950s, Goetze’s Candy officially renamed their company from The Baltimore Chewing Gum Company to Goetze’s Candy Company.

Flavors and Variations Over Time

Over the past 100-plus years, many different flavors and varieties of Caramel Creams have been introduced. In 1984, one of the most popular spins on Caramel Creams was introduced: Cow Tales! These sweets contain the same chewy caramel around a creamy center but are in a long stick form instead of the “bulls-eye” circle shape. A few other inventions include:

  • 1968: Licorice-flavored Caramel Creams
  • 1971: Chocolate Caramel Creams
  • 1980: Strawberry Caramel Creams
  • 1982: The iconic twist wrapping is introduced and still used today
  • 1985: Banana Cow Tales are introduced
  • 1993: Caramel Apple Cow Tales, originally named “Caramel Apple Sticks”
  • 1996: Chocolate Cow Tales

At Wockenfuss Candies, you can find packages of classic Caramel Creams, Cow Tales, and one of the many modern variations, Cow Tales with Oreo Cookie Pieces
