Why the Egg?

The Easter egg’s journey to what we know today has been long. Across the world, the egg has symbolized fertility, rebirth, and new beginnings. Greeks, Romans, Egyptians, and Persians dyed eggs, using them as part of their spring equinox celebrations. After Christianity became widespread, the egg symbolized Easter and the rebirth of Jesus Christ. Over the years, Easter eggs have become more decorative and visually pleasing.

The Tradition of Exchanging an Easter Egg as a Gift

Each year, millions of children’s faces light up upon receiving a fancy Easter egg in their baskets. For centuries, friends and family exchanged gifts at the spring equinox; this tradition became part of Easter celebrations. During the Victorian era, egg-shaped presents were hollow, oval-shaped creations filled with Easter treats. Fabergé eggs were the most extravagant gift in this tradition a person could receive.

Around this same time, chocolate eggs appeared in France and Germany, and would eventually become popular in the UK. The flavor varieties available now didn’t exist; the hollow chocolates were darker and a little bitter. British chocolatiers made the chocolate Easter egg tastier, contributing to the prevalence of this worldwide custom.
