The Origins of the Caramel Apple

Discover the origin of caramel apples and select your favorite at Wockenfuss this year!

Delicious candy and caramel apples have been a seasonal treat for adults and kids alike for many years. The first candy apple is said to have been invented as far back as 1908 and sold for just five cents apiece! However, the caramel apples we know and love during the Halloween and fall seasons were not invented until many years later. If you’re a fan of the caramel apple, keep reading to discover the origins of this treat and which varieties you can enjoy this year at Wockenfuss Candies.

The First Caramel Apple

The legend goes that the first caramel apple was created in the 1950s. A Kraft Foods employee discovered the recipe while experimenting with excess caramels from Halloween sales. He melted the caramels down and dipped the apples into it, and the rest is history.

Then, in 1960, a shop worker named Vito Raimondi invented and then patented the first caramel apple machine with the help of his uncle William, who owned a confectionery company in Chicago. The Raimondi machine-dipped caramel apple company is still in business! Since its origins decades ago, the caramel apple has evolved into a delicious candy wonder with numerous variants, adding anything from chocolate to chopped nuts on top of caramel apples.

Whether you prefer classic caramel, chocolate, nuts, or other seasonal flavors, you can find an apple treat to enjoy. Every caramel apple begins with a crisp Granny Smith apple. Then, a coating of caramel is added. In addition to the classic plain caramel apple, we have a few varieties that are coated in chocolate, including:

  • Milk Chocolate Caramel Apple

Many people enjoy adding crunchy nuts on top of their caramel apples. If that’s your preference, try the following:

  • Peanut Butter Explosion Apple (which includes crunchy peanuts and peanut butter drizzle!)

Finally, we have a few seasonal flavors that are especially enjoyable during fall. These include:
