The Untold Story of Caramel

The Untold Story of Caramel

Caramel is a popular pairing when combined with chocolate.

Caramel is a popular pairing when combined with chocolate. It’s also studded with nuts and mixed with a variety of chocolate flavors and other toppings, such as sea salt. Plus, it makes a great addition to an ice cream sundae. Here are some more fun facts about it!

It Has a Special Holiday

Like many other delicious foods, caramel has a special holiday in its honor. October has been designated as National Caramel Month, so unlike other food-celebrating holidays, it has more than a single day dedicated to it. And you can, of course, celebrate all year long by indulging in the yummy products offered by Wockenfuss! Milk chocolate caramel hearts make a great gift for Valentine’s Day, which is only a few weeks away. You can also bring a taste of the beach home when you purchase our iconic caramel popcorn. Why wait another nine months to enjoy some of your favorite snacks?

Simple But Versatile

Believe it or not, caramel is incredibly easy to make. Despite its simplicity, it is also versatile, perfect for a wide range of other uses. You don’t need to be a confectioner to be in-the-know, either. The three ingredients that are essential for making tasty caramel are butter, milk, and sugar.  Try making some great-tasting caramel at home as a fun way to spend more time with your family

It Is Centuries Old

Caramel might sound like a modern invention, but its history goes back much farther than that. The world of sweet things changed for the better in the 17th century. America hadn’t taken shape yet, but the colonists were already experimenting with new ways to make food. Sugar and boiling water led to the first batches of caramel long before they would be included in cookies or turned into a thick syrup. Best of all, it was easy to make, inexpensive, and tasty enough to put a smile on everybody’s face!

The Creation of Caramel Apples

Caramel apples are another classic treat. Think about what you do during the fall: pumpkin picking, hayrides, corn mazes, trick-or-treating, and of course, bobbing for apples! Caramel apples owe their existence to a happy accident in the 1950s. Dan Walker, who worked for Kraft Foods, dipped some apples into melted caramel, mainly to see what would happen. Much like many of eating’s best surprises, the combination was terrific enough to maintain its popularity ever since!
