The History of Valentine’s Day
Valentine’s Day, as you may or may not know, is named for Saint Valentine and has roots in both Christian and ancient Roman traditions. But who is Saint Valentine? Well, that much is a mystery. According to History.com, there are at least three saints named Valentine or Valentinus. There are, however, several theories as to the history of Valentine’s Day.
- Valentine was a priest in Rome during the third century. At this time, Emperor Claudius II, believing single men made better soldiers, outlawed marriage for young men. In clear defiance of the Emperor, Valentine performed marriages in secret. The Saint was later put to death by Claudius for his actions.
- Valentine was helping persecuted Christians flee Roman before being imprisoned. While in jail, the Saint fell in love with a young girl to whom he would write letters signed “From your Valentine.” Thus, the tradition of sending Valentines was born.
No matter which story you prefer, Valentine’s Day is celebrated in mid-February to celebrate the Saint’s death. The day coincides with the pagan holiday Lupercalia, a fertility festival dedicated to Faunus, the Roman god of agriculture. Later, at the end of the 5th century, Pope Gelasius officially declared February 14th St. Valentine’s Day. However, it was not until much later that the day became the love-filled holiday it is now.
