Our Story

Wockenfuss Candies is proud to be one of the oldest candy makers in Baltimore. We celebrated our 100th Anniversary in 2015. We are a family-owned business that is now in its fifth generation of candy-making.

Our story began in 1875 when Herman Charles Wockenfuss was born in West Prussia, Germany. He came to America in 1885 and learned the art of candy making. In 1915, he proudly established the Wockenfuss Candy Company, which is known today as Wockenfuss Candies.

Herman Charles operated the business until his son, Herman Lee, and his wife, Marian, took over in 1945 when Herman Lee returned from World War II. Under Herman Lee’s leadership, the business evolved and added three more stores to its flagship location on Belair Road in Northeast Baltimore. He played a key role in creating the signature homemade chocolate candies that are now closely associated with Wockenfuss Candies’ reputation.

By the 1970s, their son, Paul, and daughter, Joan, joined the business. In the 1990s, Paul became the third-generation owner, ensuring the continuation of the family legacy. He expanded the company and relocated the factory to its current site. Today, there are seven retail stores in Maryland, including two in Ocean City.

Today, Wockenfuss Candies is owned and operated by Paul and Lynn’s three daughters, reflecting the family’s commitment to their craft. Wockenfuss is proud to be a woman-owned business and continues “Making Life Sweet” with its high-quality candies and confections.
