Origins
Gummi candies are very popular in America, but did you know they have German roots? In the early 1900s, Hans Riegel, a German confectioner, created a gelatin-based, bear-shaped candy to sell in his local area. While many people view Riegel as the creator of gummi candies, similar candies gained success in other parts of the world. Turkish delight and Japanese rice candies are similar in consistency but are made with cornstarch or rice, not gelatin. A little known fact is that gummi candies are also related to jams and jellies since they all involve combining sugar and fruit.
Different Shapes
Riegel’s original gummi bears were a lot taller and slimmer than the ones we know and love. This continued for decades, until in 1960 executives at Haribo began to market their gummi bears to other European countries. As time went on, gummies shaped like worms and other animals became popular! There are even gummi versions of other foods that have become popular in recent years.
