On May 21st, everyone’s favorite candy company, Wockenfuss Candies was mentioned on the cover of the Baltimore Sun. The article, which can be found here, discussed Baltimore’s candy-makers who are pressing congress to overturn a sugar policy, which has been in effect since the Great Depression.
In short, the sugar policy places restrictions on foreign sugar imports which is hurtful to small businesses like ourselves because it inflates the cost of making some of your favorite candies.
The debate between the sugar industry and consumers who purchase sugar by the truckload is expected to be presented in front of congress and be resolved this week.
Here at Wockenfuss Candies, we purchase about 40,000 pounds of sugar annually. The overturning of this bill would provide us with access to cheaper, imported sugar and level the playing field between big businesses and us (the Mom and Pop shops). On the other side of the argument, eliminating these restrictions could put domestic farmers out of business.
Wockenfuss Candies is not the only company who purchases sugar in large quantities. More than 190 other food manufactures in Maryland purchase large quantities of sugar annually.
Here at Wockenfuss, we are committed to making all your sweet dreams come true. Since 1915, we have been spreading the joy that candy can bring around Maryland and beyond.
